Elementary SEL Survey

Dear Hamilton-Wenham Families,

What is Social Emotional Learning (SEL)? Social-emotional learning (SEL) is the process of developing self-awareness, self-management, and interpersonal skills that are vital for school, work, and life success.

The ways to describe SEL practices and activities vary greatly by context and purpose (i.e., student age, school, community, etc.). SEL can be a set-aside classroom time/period, a specific curriculum, or an orientation that is integrated throughout a school’s policies, practices, and programs. For younger students (grades K-5), SEL may be described as activities, lessons, or programs that increase positive attitudes, commitment to learning, emotional and intellectual curiosity, social competencies, and positive identity. These are just a few examples, please note that this is not an exhaustive list and may look or sound different at your child's school.

We invite you to take this Family/Caregiver survey to gain a better understanding of your experiences and perceptions of social-emotional learning (SEL) as a Parent and/or Primary Caregiver.  The survey should take approximately 10 minutes.

Data from the survey will inform school staff and administration on families' perceptions of SEL implementation and ways to enhance best practices in the school and classroom. The data will also inform the HWRSD in developing a Social Emotional Learning Pathway that aligns with the CASEL framework.
In addition,  we are asking the HWRSD students, PK-5, to participate in a brief survey to gain an understanding of their social-emotional learning skills, needs, and sense of belonging.  All students who agree to participate will complete a brief Google form at the designated time at their school.  Prior to taking the survey, all students will be informed that participation is voluntary and that opting out will in no way impact their standing at school. All information collected will be kept confidential.

A copy of the survey will be available at your student’s administration office.  If you do NOT want your child to participate in the student survey, please reach out to Dr. Kristen Lazzaro, Director of School Counseling, PK-12 at k.lazzaro@hwschools.net  or Ms Juliana Schneider, Cutler Principal at j.schneider@hwschools.net as soon as possible.  Students will be participating in the survey during the week of Nov 6th-9th.

If you have any questions about the surveys, you may contact Dr. Kristen Lazzaro, Director of School Counseling, or Ms. Juliana Schneider, Principal of Cutler School.
