HW State Tournament & Championship Season Update (6/14/26 - 10:00 PM)

>>> Baseball, Boys Tennis, and Girls Tennis fall in the State Finals; Teams were the catalyst for the most successful season in a decade <<<

HW Baseball (CAL Champs, 23-2) came up just shy in their bid for the school's first Baseball State Championship since 1988 on Saturday at Polar Park against Seekonk.   After falling behind, 2-0 in the top of the first, the Generals immediately roared right back and tied the game in the bottom half of the frame.  The game remained that way until the bottom of the 6th when HW plated their 3rd run of the game and took their first lead.  But a two-out Seekonk rally in the top of the 7th scored two runs, ending the Generals dream of a State Title. It was a bitter pill to swallow for the HW Nine, but one game and one inning does not take away from all that this hard-working group accomplished.  Seniors Ryan Fazio, Cormac Heney, Luke Molitano, Owen Waddell, Chase Cann, Griffin Hawkins, Justin Bradley, Josh Greenspon, Caden Schrock, and Cam McIntosh leave a legacy of excellence that includes back-to-back CAL Titles and appearances in the MIAA Final Four.

HW Girls Tennis (CAL Champs, 17-3) fell to Manchester-Essex, 3-2 on Saturday at MIT in the State Finals of the MIAA Division IV State Tournament.  The Generals, who advanced to the final round on the strength of a pulsating, comeback win the Final Four against Bromfield, made it to the championship match for the 5th year in a row.  But this year was not to be.  HW did earn victories in 1st and 2nd Doubles in the ultimate match of the season.  Congratulations to an incredible collection of Seniors who graduate with three State and CAL titles as well as 19 State Tournament wins on their generational resumes:  Gillian Horner, Gabriella Jewitt, Emily McIntosh, and Clare O'Toole

HW Boys Tennis (CAL Champs, 19-2) also advanced to the State Finals of the MIAA Division IV State Tournament and faced Mystic Valley on Saturday at MIT.  The Generals earned victories in 1st and 2nd Doubles and, when the match was knotted at 2-2, 2nd Singles stood at 1-1.  HW had dropped the first set but came back to tie up the deciding match and bring it to a third and final set.  The Eagles of Mystic Valley soared out to quick leads of 4-0 and 5-1 before the Generals stiffened and made a strong bid at a once in a lifetime comeback.  In the end, the Eagles were too much and the Boys' season came to a close. Saturday's result doers not deter from the career accomplishments of Seniors Wyatt Arvanites, Alex Boardman, Jonas D'Arrigo, Patrick Driscoll, Joseph Purington, Gavin Meyer, Grayson Minich, Paul Juong, Kevin Spoon, and Rory Taylor.  This group leaves with four CAL Titles, three Final Fours and an appearance in the State Finals.

Spring Success provides Catalyst for Hyland Award

Thanks in large part to the most successful Spring Season in a decade, HW Athletics has earned the 2025-26 Hyland Award for the 5th time in the last seven years it has been given.

The Hyland Award is the Cape Ann League's top honor and it is given to the Athletic Department that excels throughout the course of the year in participation, community service, academics, sportsmanship and on-field success at the varsity level.

This past Spring saw all six HW teams (Baseball, Boys Lacrosse, Girls Lacrosse, Softball, Boys Tennis and Girls Tennis) qualify for the State Tournament while earning a total of 97 wins. This is the highest total in at least the last 15 years that the Generals secured that many victories in a single season.  The only other time HW reached 90, was when they earned 90 wins in the Fall of 2016.

The Generals also won the Hyland Award in 2019, 2020, 2023, and 2024.  It was not presented in 2021.

Congratulations to the student-athletes, coaches, and all who support them for this wonderful honor.

HW State Tournament & Championship Season Update (6/14/26 - 10:00 PM)

    >>> Baseball, Boys Tennis, and Girls Tennis fall in State Finals; Teams were the catalyst for the most successful season in well over a decade <<<

HW Baseball (CAL Champs, 23-1) defeated Saint John Paul II at Moran Field in Dorchester on Tuesday, 10-0 in the Final Four Round of the MIAA Division IV State Tournament.  The Generals advance thanks to terrific pitching, defense, and an avalanche of scoring in the late innings.

The HW Nine will travel to Polar Park (100 Madison Street in Worcester), home of the AAA Red Sox, to face #7 Seekonk High School on Saturday, June 13th at 12:00 PM.

HW Girls Tennis (CAL Champs, 17-3) fell to Manchester-Essex, 3-2 on Saturday at MIT in the State Finals of the MIAA Division IV State Tournament .  After a scintillating comeback win against Bromfield in the Final Four, the Generals were seeking their fifth consecutive State Title and earned wins in 1st and 2nd Doubles.  HW had beaten the Hornets in two previous finals match-ups (2023 and 2025) but this year was not to be.  What an incredible run for Girl's squad.  Seniors Gillian Horner, Gabriella Jewitt, Clare O'Toole, and Emily McInitosh graduate with three State and League Titles and 19 Tournament wins on their resume.

Just moments after the Girl's season came to a close, HW Boys Tennis (CAL Champs, 19-3) fell to Mystic Valley, 3-2 on Saturday at MIT in the State Finals of the MIAA Division IV State Tournament.  The Generals had earned wins in 1st and 2nd Doubles and were tied 2-2, with 2nd Singles still in the balance.  HW had dropped the first set and came back to win the second set.  I the third and deciding set, the Eagles raced out to a commanding lead (4-0 and 5-1) but the Generals came roaring back.  In the end, the valiant comeback was just short and HW's incredible season concluded just short of their goal.  Congrats to Seniors: Wyatt Arvanites, Alex Boardman, Jonas D'Arrigo, Patrick Driscoll, Joseph Purrington, Gavin Meyer, Grayson Minich, Paul Juong, Kevin Spoon, Rory and Taylor. Their career included four CAL Championships, three trips to the Final Four, and an appearance at MIT in the State Finals.
