Student Services

Student Services Department oversees Special Education and Counseling in grades Pre-Kindergarten through 12, English Language Learners (ELL), Section 504, Early Education & Care Grant, Home and Hospital Tutoring. The goal of the Student Services Office is to provide each student with the necessary strategies, skills, and support to function as independent and contributing members of the school and community.

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District provides individualized educational programming that is accessible and meaningful to students requiring special education services. The district’s core belief is that all students can learn and that the purpose for special education is to minimize the impact of the disability and maximize opportunities for students with disabilities to participate in all aspects of our school community.

Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District Announces Child Find Effort

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District offer comprehensive special education services to eligible students ages three through 21 years and to children from birth through age 21 years who have a hearing or visual impairment.  Children from birth to age three with other disabilities will be referred to appropriate agencies for services.  All referrals are considered confidential, and services are provided at no cost.  The parent, legal guardian, or surrogate parent retains the right to refuse services and are provided other procedural safeguards under federal and state law.


Public school services include screening in areas of suspected disabilities, such as vision, hearing, motor skills, speech, language, and general development.  Evaluations in the schools are provided for several areas of suspected disabilities, including learning disabilities, speech and language development, physical impairments, vision or hearing problems, intellectual disability, emotional disturbances, autism, health impairments, or traumatic brain injuries.


A free, appropriate public education with a full continuum of services is available.  For more information concerning eligibility criteria and referral procedures, please contact the principal of your local school.  The Director of Student Services, Stacy Bucyk, is also available to answer your questions by calling 978-468-5303, or sending an e-mail to s.bucyk@hwschools.net

This guide highlights postsecondary education topics and provides resources for students and their families. Many of the resources presented in this guide are from the Massachusetts Department of Secondary Education planning and resources for students with disabilities.  The resources presented in this guide will help support your family. Hamilton-Wenham Regional High School should thoroughly prepare all students for achieving his or her desired post-high school goals. The student's IEP should reflect the services and supports needed to assist the student to gain the skills, experiences, and connections to make their post-high school goals a reality. Transitional Services offer assessment, structure, and guidance to ensure that the student is prepared for the most successful transition from high school. Transitional Services address the following areas:

  1. Coach every student, along with his or her family, to think about goals for life after high school and to develop a long-range plan to get there.
  2. Design the high school experience to ensure that the student gains the skills and competencies needed to achieve his or her desired post-school goals
  3. Identify and link students and families to any needed post-school services, supports or program before the student exits the school system.
  4. Support the student to discover and explore areas of interest and understand strengths and weaknesses. The student will develop self-advocacy skills in order to make informed decisions about their future, and through self-advocacy, the student is able to express his or her preferences. A student's voice is critical to the transition process. (adapted from Storms, et, al. 2000)
As a student prepares for studies at the postsecondary education level, they need to recognize and express their strengths and needs.  It is a student's decision to disclose their disability and personal challenges at the post-secondary education level. A student may share and disclose their IEP from high school and evaluations and assessments. The greatest change from high school to the postsecondary education level is the shift in responsibility from parent to the students. This guide will serve to help you to navigate and develop an understanding of the postsecondary education process. This document along with the website will be available to students, parents, and staff to navigate the transitional process.

English Language Learner Goals

The Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District (HWRSD) is a low incidence district for English Language Learners (ELLs). Under state law, G.L.c.71A, it is the obligation of the district to determine if a student needs language support and to provide that support so that all LEP students are proficient readers and writers of English and are able to meet state and district academic standards. The ELL Program and associated services are offered to all students meeting criteria as outlined under federal and state guidelines. The district’s goals are to ensure the academic success of every student who is educated in the Hamilton-Wenham Regional School District and to ensure students are proficient in social and academic English incorporating the WIDA English Language Development Standards covering all four language domains (speaking, listening, reading, and writing).
